Joshua James is a tattoo artist with over a decade of experience, having begun his career in the United Kingdom before traveling extensively to tattoo throughout Europe, South America, and across the United States. His work draws strong influence from traditional Americana and Japanese tattooing, as well as graphic novels, manga, and gaming culture. He specializes in both bold and fine line tattooing, with a versatile approach that allows him to work across a wide range of styles.

Joshua is particularly drawn to subject matter rooted in the natural world, alongside high fantasy themes and creatures from both the physical and spiritual realms. His designs often reflect a balance between imagination and structure, combining expressive storytelling with strong technical foundations.

On being part of Guru Tattoo, Joshua shares that the studio has long stood as a cornerstone of illustrative and large-scale tattooing in San Diego, with a reputation built over more than two decades. Being part of that legacy marks a significant milestone in his career, and he looks forward to contributing to the community through work designed to stand the test of time.

Outside of tattooing, Joshua trains in Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and enjoys strength training, camping, hiking, and spending time outdoors. Prior to tattooing, he served as Airborne Infantry with the 82nd Airborne Division, and he values the opportunity to connect and work with fellow veterans.

Joshua approaches each tattoo as a collaboration, working closely with his clients to create designs that are both visually striking and built to last. With a strong emphasis on fundamentals, longevity, and craftsmanship, he ensures every piece whether flash or custom, is executed with care and intention. Just as important as the tattoo itself is the experience: he strives to create a welcoming, comfortable environment where clients feel heard, respected, and confident throughout the process.
