Max is a nonbinary tattoo artist with over 13 years of experience and a distinctive illustrative style rooted in black & grey with color accents. Their work draws from nature, mysticism, fantasy, comic books, and anime, with a particular love for animals, botanical imagery, monsters, and designs that blur the line between beautiful and weird.

After 15 years living and working in NYC, including running their own private studio in Brooklyn for the last four years, Max recently relocated to San Diego to begin a new chapter of their practice.

Max approaches tattooing as a collaborative process, taking a client’s idea and developing it into something personal while creating an environment where people feel comfortable, seen, and involved. They’re especially passionate about fostering an inclusive and welcoming space for queer and femme clients.

After years of working independently, Guru offered an opportunity to join an artist community that would challenge Max creatively and encourage continued growth. Being surrounded by high caliber artists with different specialties and perspectives was a major part of what drew them to the shop.

Outside of tattooing, Max is almost always making something. They’re an obsessive sketchbook artist and spend much of their time drawing, printmaking, and studying art. Since moving to San Diego, they’ve also fallen hard for beach life and can regularly be found exploring the coast, practicing shibari, surfing, or drawing somewhere near the ocean.
