“It would be a great forum”

May 20th, 2008

By Marcia Manna

The San Diego Union-Tribune

The upper part of Chad Brown’s chest and arms is a mantle of black that stops just beneath the armpit. Then, a Micronesian-inspired design of geometric shapes emerge, traveling down his torso and decorating the length of his arm like a sleeve and ending just past the wrist.

When the curious ask Brown what his full body tattoo means, he replies, “Well, after hundreds of hours of work spread out over sixteen years at a cost totaling over $20,000, the word ‘dedication’ comes to mind.

Brown is one of the models who will walk the runway Saturday for “Masterworks for Body Art,” a fundraising event that complements the Oceanside Museum of Art exhibition “Ancient Marks: The Sacred Origins of Tattoos and Body Marking.”

The show is intended for a mature audience, with models representing San Diego’s top tattoo artists, including guest curator Chris Winn, San Diego artist Fip Buchanan of Avalon Tattoo II and Rory Keating of Guru Tattoo in Pacific Beach.

Keating, who specializes in “tribal” designs inspired by various Pacific Island cultures, created Brown’s full-body suit.

“It was a collaborate process from the beginning,” said Brown, “I always had a very strong view on how the design should look and feel, and I always provided Rory with hand-drawn designs to base our work from. However, it takes a master tattoo artist to take an individual’s designs and translate them from paper to the complex compounding curves of the body.”

The effort and artistry required of a master tattoo artist is also displayed in the museum’s exhibit of more than 100 black-and-white images taken by documentary photographer Chris Rainier.

It’s not so unusual for a museum to exhibit provocative images that portray the tattoo art of various cultures.

But complementing the show with live canvases sauntering down a catwalk is evidence that the body art we once might have associated with military machismo and unsavory characters is now a viable art form. After the show, hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served.

“I was contacted by the museum’s executive director, Skip Pahl, about the idea of a runway show,” said Winn, known at La Jolla Tattoo for his traditional and Japanese-inspired designs.

“We’ve done contests that demonstrate the quality and design of the work at conventions, but we’ve never done a museum runway show. I knew it would be a great forum. It’s about time we get the recognition that we have wished for. We work very hard at what we do.”

The artists also work very hard at learning the history and techniques of creating body art.

When Keating first saw tribal tattoos, they appealed to him visually.

“I like that look because of the strength and simplicity of the design,” he said. “I find that abstract tribal designs seem more appropriate on the human body than detailed illustrations.”

In Samoan culture, traditional tribal tattoos are often created with a boar’s tusk or bone that has been carved to razor sharp-points in the shape of a comb. The comb (not as sharp as an electric needle but sharp enough to do the job) is dipped into ink and tapped into the flesh with a mallet or stick.

Both Keating and his wife have traveled to Samoa, had their picture taken by Rainier and chose to have tattoos administered in the traditional Samoan way.

“It was painful,” Keating admitted. “One to three people assist and sometimes they will sing. When they sing, it hurts less. It’s a slow process to learn and most who have been taught that style are from traditional tattooing cultures.”

Those who saw the televised “Tattoo Wars,” a reality competition that aired on the Learning Channel last year, will recognize Keating, who won the challenge by viewer votes. Inspired by the miniature abstract pattern that a female client admired on the border of Vietnamese currency, he created a design that stretched across her upper chest, from shoulder to shoulder.

When he’s working at Guru Tattoo, Keating said that he sometimes refuses requests to create body art that he feels is inappropriate. He won’t duplicate a design on a part of the body that is considered sacred to a specific culture. He also refuses to copy a celebrity tattoo or create a design that would be considered offensive or hateful.

Keating said he is especially proud of the body suit he created for Brown.

“It’s one cohesive design and the only full suit in the runway show,” Keating said. “It’s a lot of work and stress, but it is the ultimate presentation of your work.”

x-mas jokes

December 11th, 2007

What would x-mas be this year without some dirty jokes? Here is a few to share with the family while digging through your stocking this year.

Q. What do the female reindeer do when Santa takes the male reindeer out on Christmas Eve?
A. They go into to town and blow a few bucks.

Q. Why doesn’t Santa have any children?
A. Because he only comes once a year, and when he does, it’s down the chimney.

Q. Why did the snowman have a smile on his face?
A. Because the snowblower was coming down the block.

Turk Wins in Montreal

September 28th, 2007

Turk returned home from Canada with “Tattoo of the Day”, “Best Tattoo of the Convention” and a big smile from the Montreal Tattoo Convention (September 14th-16th).

Here’s what Turk had to say about his experience in Montreal two weeks ago…

“Montreal is a beautiful city! The people are friendly, the food is amazing, and they have great taste in tattoos, hahaha! This is my third year at this convention, and i have to say, it gets better every year i go. I am grateful to have won the “Tattoo of the Day”, and have that same tattoo win the “Best Tattoo of the Convention”, especially when working with some of the best tattoo artists that North America has to offer. I look forward to returning next year and representing the Guru name…”

What do you think of Turk’s winning piece? Let it all out…like you do when your girlfriends not around, right here.

Rory Keating on TLC’s “Tattoo Wars”

September 24th, 2007

The Learning Channels “Tattoo Wars” is a show that pits the best tattoo artists of our time against each other in a head to head creation competition. In each episode the world, legend and work of two internationally acclaimed tattooists is explored. They then travel to a huge tattoo expo where the stars, in three hours time, ink a tattoo on the skin of two willing clients. These creations have a common theme, such as a dragon, a calla lily, a sailor, a tribal gauntlet, or a hanya (Japanese devil mask) but are rendered in the unique style of each artist. As the show closes, thousands of show attendees vote for the creation they like the best and the winning artist takes home the Tattoo Wars trophy.

Guru’s Rory Keating will debut on Tattoo Wars October 18th. Rory was being filmed this past August at both Guru Tattoo and the Seattle Tattoo Convention for his upcoming TV appearance. He will be featured on Episode 2. For a full schedule of airing times, please visit the link below.

Please let us know right here what you think of the show!

Law & Order ACTOR for president? Are you joking?

Fred Thompson announced “I am running for president of the United States,” during a taping of NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” last Wednesday evening. While this guy was fondling Jay Leno’s balls, his competitors were dutifully sweating it out under the debating heat lamps.

Granted, Thompson has had a multifaceted career as a prosecutor, lobbyist, ACTOR and U.S. senator from Tennessee. But basically, he’s just using his fame to elongate that flabby turtle neck of his for that extra inch needed to win the race against his fellow competitors.

In his video announcement the next day, Thompson showed his support for what he termed “common-sense conservative principles,” including low taxes, free markets, balanced budgets. Uhhhh sound familiar?

Thompson’s view on the war in Iraq pushes for a withdrawal of U.S. forces, encompassing President Bush’s view that the U.S. effort in Iraq is a central front in the war on terror.

“They know if we abandon our efforts, or appear weak and divided… Blah BLAHH blaah BLaah…

Do we really need another actor in Politics? Fuck it, lets throw the GOVERNATOR in the mix. I mean seriously.
